Chayito Champion: Voice and Presence
The archive often preserves performance in fragments: a photograph, a name, a remembered stage. Rosalinda “Chayito” Champion is presented here not as a footnote to another story, but as an artist with a presence of her own.

Voice and Presence
Rosalinda “Chayito” Champion grew up in a family that helped shape the history of flamenco in San Antonio. Her parents, Teresa Champion and Willie “El Curro” Champion, were among the artists who established a lasting presence for Spanish dance and music in the city. For Chayito, flamenco was not something encountered later in life. It was part of her upbringing, surrounded by the performers, musicians and traditions that defined her family’s work.
But Chayito would develop a career of her own. As a singer, dancer, teacher and director of Los Flamencos de San Antonio, she carried that early influence into performances both at home and abroad. Her work reflects a lifetime spent not only performing flamenco, but helping sustain its presence in a city with a history in the art form that reaches back generations.
Her professional achievements, teaching and honors are documented in her artist biography. Here, the focus is her artistic presence: the photographs and the sound of her voice.
The photographs in this exhibition, taken by Nicole Marie Moore, capture Chayito in performance. Two audio recordings extend that visual record: one from Arte y Pasión’s Colores (2016) and another documenting Los Flamencos de San Antonio at Mission San José (2017).
Chayito occupies a particular place in San Antonio’s flamenco history. She inherited a tradition from two influential performers, made it her own and helped carry it forward. Her career is part of the larger story of a city where flamenco has survived through families, teachers, performers and the communities that continue to support them.
