Chayito Champion: Voice and Presence
The archive often preserves performance in fragments: a photograph, a name, a remembered stage. Rosalinda “Chayito” Champion appears here not as a footnote to someone else’s story, but as a presence in her own right.
San Antonio’s flamenco history was never a single straight line. It was carried by individual artists whose work moved through stages, studios, families, friendships and community memory. Chayito belongs to that larger story while retaining her own identity within it.
This exhibition begins with a simple act of recognition: placing her image, name and presence back into the visual record. As the WeFlamenco archive grows, additional photographs, recordings and oral histories can expand that record without flattening it into a single lineage.
