Artist Profile
Nicole Marie Moore
Quiet Innovator — shaping how San Antonio flamenco is seen and remembered.

Photographer · Writer · Poet · Cultural Documentarian
For more than a decade, Nicole Marie Moore has photographed flamenco in San Antonio, preserving not only performances but the fleeting gestures, personalities and relationships through which a community becomes visible. Her work has helped create a visual record of artists, companies and collaborations that might otherwise survive only in memory.
Moore’s innovation is quiet but consequential. She does not impose one fixed image of flamenco. Her photographs attend to the tension in a hand, the concentration before a step, the glance between performers and the personality that remains visible inside the form. The pictures are portraits as much as performance documents.
Her photographs of Arte y Pasión’s Angel of Gravity were published by the Rivard Report in 2014, documenting Tamara Adira, Stephan Gaeth, Luisma Ramos, Chayito Champion and other artists during an experimental period in San Antonio flamenco. One image from that body of work, with its theatrical scale and sculptural tension, has circulated repeatedly in local media and become part of the visual memory of the production.
In 2018, Moore presented her first documented solo photography exhibition, Along the Way: Moments Captured in Nature, Dance and Life, at St. Mary’s University’s Louis J. Blume Library Gallery as part of FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA. Dance occupied a central place in the exhibition, alongside landscape and moments from everyday life.
Some of Moore’s images have moved beyond documentation to become emblems. Her portrait of multidisciplinary artist Daniela Riojas, with its fantastical costume and layered cross-cultural imagery, became one of the defining images of WeFlamenco Fest. It communicates a central idea of the festival: flamenco in San Antonio is shaped by exchange, invention, memory and the artists who make the form their own.
Moore is also a writer and poet with an MFA in Creative Writing–Poetry from Texas State University. Her poetry has appeared in The Texas Observer, and she has participated in San Antonio’s literary community as a commissioned poet. That training in observation, compression and narrative carries into her photography, where a single gesture can suggest a larger story.
Over time, the accumulation of these photographs changes the meaning of the individual image. Dancers age, companies change, venues disappear and collaborations exist for one evening before they are gone. Moore’s photographs hold those temporary constellations together. Her contribution is not only that she recorded the community, but that she helped determine how it could be seen and remembered.
